Saint Benedict of Nursia, a figure famously known for being a hermit for his monastic life, was an extremely influential man during the 5th and 6th centuries. Most may recognize him as the founder of the Benedictine order, however his impact on the Catholic Church has been both profound and lasting. This man had tremendous character and lived an eventful life.

Originally, Saint Benedict studied rhetoric in Rome, but discovered the licentiousness lifestyle of the city much too impure for his liking. He soon left, and lived as a hermit in a cave outside Enfide for a duration of three years. It was during this time as a hermit when a group of pious men came to Saint Benedict and begged him to be their abbot. They proved to be unwilling and unable to live up to Saint Benedict’s holy standard, then tried to kill him with poison wine. While blessing the cup of poisoned wine, the cup shattered, spilling the deadly concoction onto the ground. He soon left the delinquent monks.

After leaving the insubordinate monks, Saint Benedict established twelve monasteries with twelve monks each in an region south of Rome. It was sometime later when he moved to Monte Cassino, where he destroyed the pagan temple that was dedicated to the Roman God Apollo. This is where he would build his premier monastery.

Saint Benedict is presented as the model saint who fled temptation to pursue a life worthy in the eyes of God.
